The sixth annual Tunbridge
Wells International Music Festival was launched at the
Trinity Theatre by 12 year old cellist Harry Gilfillan
and his three sisters; Anastasia (13), Tatiana (10)and Natalya (8) playing piano and violin, all of whom have
entered the Yehudi Menuhin School. The theatre’s
artistic manager John Martin said: “Now more than ever,
encouraging performances like this is so important to
lift the spirit”. – The Kent Courier, May 15, 2009 |

Review of
“Neue Press Coburg”, Germany 05.08.2008 by Dr Peter
Muller.
“The second part of the concert was a marathon of
concertos, of which the highlight was provided by Harry
Gilfillan; he pulled off a triumph with Joseph Haydn's C
Major Cello concerto. A genuine master of his
instrument, the young virtuoso showed consummate skill
in both rubato and legato passages and it felt as though
the orchestra and the young soloist had been welded into
a single harmonic whole as the former was able to feel
its way into the spirit of the latter's playing. Both
demonstrated great gusto and wit as they performed the
two outer movements cleverly, and at a cracking pace. In
the middle movement, the adagio, with his long drawn out
strokes of the bow, Harry Gilfillan made his instrument
of many voices sing a romantic aria with every nuance of
pianissimo and quite took his audience's breath away. In
the third movement, it was as though he crept
surreptitiously into the orchestra's energetic tutti, in
order to demonstrate his brilliance as a soloist by
playing at a passionate tempo. Conductor, Alexander
Shevchuk found the young artist's spirit contagious, and
supported his performance in a lively manner by his
energetic swinging conducting.” |

“Harry Gilfillan, aged 11, captivated the
audience. On his small cello…he demonstrated
unbelievable skill with lightening fast fingers,
crystal clear intonation and superb bow control.
He produced a rich tone with many shades in all
three movements of Haydn’s demanding C Major Cello
Concerto.” |
